2022 Cohort

Joelle French
Joelle French is currently a Graduate Student in the Masters of Public Policy Program (MPP) at the University of Calgary (Class of 2022). Previous education includes a Bachelor of Arts Honors Degree in Political Science from St. Francis Xavier University (Class of 2017) and a Juris Doctor from the University of Saskatchewan (Class of 2021). Her research interests focus on the intersection of international trade, human rights and climate change. After completing her MPP degree, Joelle is hoping to move into the legal field, as an Articling Student, with a focus on corporate commercial and environmental law and is willing to relocate from Calgary for the right position. In her free time, Joelle can be found training for her second half-marathon, reading in coffee shops, and of course drinking copious amounts of lattes in those same coffee shops.

Hossein Tabatabaei
Hossein Tabatabaei is working on his MSc in Geotechnical Engineering under the supervision of Dr. Priest at the University of Calgary. Previously, he received an MSc (2017) in Geotechnical Engineering from Yazd University in Iran. Hossein has practical experience as a geotechnical engineer both in field and technical office. His current research focuses on laboratory investigation of the geomechanical properties of shale rocks. He is trilingual (Persian, English and some German) and has experience in translation.

Jason Shim
Jason Shim’s professional career spans over 20 years of progressively responsible roles in the renewable, petroleum and financial services industry. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in the Sustainable Energy Development (SEDV) program at the University of Calgary, Alberta.
He has held various engineering roles in drilling, exploitation and production operations with oil and gas companies. He specializes in solar-PV system design, energy production analysis, well planning and drilling engineering, well completions, production optimization, economic and reserves evaluations, and reservoir optimization studies. Jason recently completed an SEDV Capstone research project on the feasibility study of solar PV systems on abandoned coal mine tailings sites.
Jason is a registered Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Petroleum Engineering Technology from Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, Calgary, Alberta and a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario.

Hosein Seyed Ghafouri
Hosein Seyed Ghafouri is working towards his PhD in Geomechanics with Prof. Grasselli at the University of Toronto. He received a one-year Doctoral School Diploma (2019) in GeoEngineering, an MSc (2018) in Geotechnical Engineering, and a BSc (2015) in Civil and Environmental Engineering, all from Sharif University of Technology, Iran. He has several years of experience doing research in the field of soil and rock mechanics. Hosein is enthusiastic about Social Sciences and has completed two introductory online programs in Economics and Management from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. Hosein’s research interests include Geothermal Systems, Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resources, and Underground Geological Storage. In his spare time, Hosein enjoys reading, cooking, walking, and learning about Data Science. He speaks both English and Persian and knows a little Arabic.

Elisa Dong
Elisa Dong is an MSc Geophysics (Planetary Science Collaboration) student at Western University currently studying aftershock occurrence following large earthquakes. Her interests are broad and range from atmospheric sciences to computational methods. This is reflected in her BSc transcript and past co-op experiences. Elisa likes to visualize complex data in the form of graphs and maps in addition to communicating the results to non-science and broad audiences. Currently, she is interested in short-term projects that involve inter-departmental communications or code-monkeying around unusual datasets. She is also happy to give machine learning methods a go. In her free time, Elisa reads fantasy and sci-fi novels, plays TTRPGs, volunteers for Outreach activities, and walks around her neighbourhood petting friendly cats. Zachary Cunningham
Zachary Cunningham is working on his MSc in Sustainable Energy Development at the University of Calgary. He has a BEng (Hons) in Petroleum Engineering (2020) from UCSI University in Kuala Lumpur, as well as a Diploma in Petroleum Engineering Technology (2014) from NAIT. Before entering advanced studies, he spent extensive time on drilling and workover rigs in Canada and offshore Malaysia in various roles. His research interests include hydrogen development in the Northwest Territories and methane emissions reduction. Prior to studying at the University of Calgary, Zachary spent nearly a decade overseas in Southeast Asia and has a keen interest in the outdoors and sustainability.

Negar Nazari
Negar Nazari is working towards completion of her PhD thesis in Geology with Prof. Shcherbakov and Prof. Hart at the University of Western Ontario. She received her MSc in Petroleum Geoscience from the University of Aberdeen where she completed her thesis with Marathon Oil Inc. Prior to returning to academia, she worked in National Iranian Oil Company as a petroleum geoscientist for six years. Her current research interests include but are not limited to induced seismicity, geomechanics, and hydrocarbon exploration and production. Negar has lived, studied, and worked in three different countries on three different continents. She continues to explore more and for the right position she is willing to relocate. Negar used to be a professional gymnast; she still maintains a very active lifestyle. She is also an avid reader. She has recently started running a virtual book club where she is committed to read 1000 pages a week.

Saeed Hatefi Ardakani
Saeed Hatefi Ardakani is working on his PhD in Civil Engineering with Prof. Gracie at the University of Waterloo. He received his MSc (2013) in Structural Engineering from University of Tehran, in Iran, and a BEng (2010) in Structural Engineering from Isfahan University of Technology, in Iran. He has more than 6 years’ experience in finite element analysis of alloys, concrete, and biomaterials in a high performance computing lab in University of Tehran, Iran. His current research focuses on a physics-informed deep learning approach for reduced order modeling of reservoir simulation, aiming to reduce the dimensionality and complexity of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) problems. He speaks English and Persian. In his free time, he enjoys playing soccer, travelling, and watching different professional sports.

Hasmik Asmaryan
Hasmik Asmaryan is working on her MSc in Sustainable Energy Development (SEDV) at the University of Calgary. She has a BSc Hon and MSc in Geology/Geophysics from the Yerevan State University, Armenia and an MSc in Environmental Sciences from the Wageningen University (WUR), the Netherlands. Hasmik’s broad range of research interests includes natural and anthropogenic causes of pollution that lead to degradation of the environment and developing systems thinking to look into potential sustainable solutions to the pollution issues. Hasmik has experience in environmental and social project management, having worked as a Researcher at the National Academy of Sciences, Armenia, a Research Intern at the Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany, and a Program Manager at the Non-Profit Organization Management sector in Canada. An inseparable part of Hasmik’s career is her community engagement, volunteering for various causes and initiatives. Hasmik enjoys crafting, re-using disposed items as a form of art.

Serafim Grubas
Serafim Grubas is a first-year PhD student in Geophysics at the University of Alberta starting Fall 2021. Serafim received a BSc (2019) and MSc (2021) in Geophysics at the Novosibirsk State University (Russia). His previous research was dedicated to using artificial neural networks to boost seismic processing procedures and to solving the eikonal equation. He works under the supervision of Prof. Mirko van der Baan. Serafim’s current research will mainly focus on using machine learning methods for quick detection and localization of earthquakes.

Julie Younes
Julie Younes is working on her PhD in civil engineering with Professor Grasselli at the University of Toronto. She received her MASc in geophysics-georisks from both University Grenoble Alpes – France and the Lebanese University – Lebanon (2020) as part of a double diploma program and a MEng in civil engineering – structure from the Lebanese University – Lebanon (2020). Her research interests include geomechanical modelling of fracture processes in rock blasting and slope stability. Julie speaks Arabic, French and English. In her spare time she enjoys cooking, reading and dancing.

Katia Ossetchkina
Katia Ossetchkina is a Master of Applied Science student (2021-present) in Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto, supervised by Professor Peterson and Professor Grasselli. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in 2019 also at the University of Toronto, majoring in Civil Engineering with two minors in Environmental Engineering and Philosophy.
Katia has two years of civil engineering research experience, focusing on microscopy, digital imaging, and petrography to investigate the durability of building materials, as well as automation of image analysis and data collection.
She also has three years of professional experience with Procter & Gamble as an Application and Data Engineer In Training, where she worked directly with finance and product supply teams to develop integrated middle-ware applications, and automated data validation, platform performance monitoring and testing processes.
Her research interests include (but are not limited to): digital and optical imaging techniques, geothermal energy, sustainable materials, and fracture modelling.

Bruna Campos
Bruna Campos is working on her PhD in Civil Engineering with Prof. Gracie at the University of Waterloo. She received her MSc in Structural Engineering (2020) at the Federal University of Minas Gerais and her BSc in Civil Engineering (2017) at the Federal University of Uberlandia, both in Brazil. During her MSc studies, Bruna worked with computational methods for numerical integration techniques in the Generalized Finite Element Method context. Currently, her research focuses on computational geomechanics and wave phenomena in porous media simulations. Bruna speaks Portuguese, English, French, and is looking forward to starting to learn Spanish. In her spare time, Bruna enjoys reading, cooking, and volunteer work.

Aref Rizehbandi
Aref Rizehbandi did his BSc in Civil Engineering at the Sharif University of Technology (2017) and received MASc in Civil engineering for risk mitigation at Politecnico di Milano (2020). He was working as a visiting scholar at TU Delft University (2019-2020). He worked on the “Estimation of streamflow based on a combination of Hydraulic modeling and data assimilation” for his Master’s thesis. His research interests include numerical modeling, data assimilation, and Kalman filtering, hydraulic fractures, and slope stability.

Dalila Caparroz
Dalila Caparroz is working on her MSc in Sustainable Energy Development at the University of Calgary. She received a BSc (2008) in Chemical Engineering from Faculdades Oswaldo Cruz, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Dalila has more than six years of experience in the Oil & Gas industry, performing well-testing operations. She worked in Brazil, Angola, and Argentina. Her broad research interests include energy, environment, and safety. Dalila speaks Portuguese, English, and Spanish. In her spare time, she enjoys exploring the outdoors with her two kids.

Jesus Rojas Parra
Jesus Rojas Parra is working on his MSc in Geophysics with Prof. David Eaton at the University of Calgary. He has two years of professional experience, mainly in seismic data processing, both active and passive. Additionally, he received a BSc (2018) in Geoscience at Universidad de Los Andes, Colombia. Jesus’ current research interest is in the use of computer programming to speed up the processing time through automatization. He is trilingual (Spanish, English and a little French) and willing to relocate for the right position. Finally, Jesus enjoys the outdoors and sports, especially soccer and rock climbing.

Sarah Hasan
Sarah Hasan is working towards her MPP degree at the University of Calgary (UofC). In 2020, she received her BHSc degree with Honours in Biomedical Sciences from UofC. For the past five years, Sarah has worked on diverse research projects, gaining extensive hands-on research and data analysis experience, and has published work in peer-reviewed journals. After graduating, Sarah founded a non-profit tutoring program for elementary school students in Alberta who have been impacted by the pandemic. She currently sits on three student-led committees at the University of Calgary, and during her spare time, enjoys volunteering with children at the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society. She also has a passion for art and travelling.

Deborah Blanca Esquivias
Deborah Blanca Esquivias, CFA, is is working on her MPP in Public Policy with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. Her research interest is in energy and economic policy. Debbie is a CFA® charterholder and received her BA* (2005) in Business Administration from Cesar E.A. Virata School of Business, in the Phillippines. Debbie has more than a decade of industry/government experience in Asia in finance management, investment, economics and cost-benefit analysis. Debbie is bilingual (English/Filipino) and she is willing to relocate for the right position. In her spare time, she organizes various educational events for the CFA Society Calgary, including the Oil and Gas Forecast Breakfast. Debbie is also a competitive figure skater, marathoner, and a doting mom of three.

Kienan Marion
Kienan Marion, GIT, is working on her PhD in Geohysics with Prof. Eaton at the University of Calgary. She received her a BSc (2014) and MSc (2018) both in Geology at the University of Western Ontario, receiving CSPG’s Best MSc Thesis Award for her sweet-spotting method combining stratigraphic and petrophysical data to model reservoir quality. Kienan has 3 years’ industry experience and 2 publications to her credit. Kienan is an avid soccer player, runner and classical pianist, who can regularly be found playing Dungeons & Dragons.

Pengfei Zhao
Pengfei Zhao, EIT, is working on his PhD in Civil Engineering with Prof. Grasselli and Prof. Peterson at the University of Toronto. He received his MASc in Civil Engineering (2016) at the Concordia University, in Montreal, where he used digital image correlation to evaluate plastic shrinkage cracking in cement-based materials, and has one publication to his credit. Pengfei received his B-Eng (2009) in Materials Science & Engineering at Chang’an University, in China, where he also worked as a materials engineer on several construction projects prior to coming to Canada. Pengfei’s research interests are: the assessment of geo-materials for use in concrete to reduce CO2 emissions in the cement industry. Pengfei is trilingual (English/French/Mandarin) and he is willing to relocate for the right position.

Rogelio (Roger) Hernández Borbón
Rogelio (Roger) Hernández Borbón will be joining us shortly to work on his MASc in Civil Engineering with Prof. Priest at the University of Calgary. Roger received his B-Eng (2020) in Civil Engineering from Autonomous University, in Mexico, and represented his school as a competitor in the American Concrete Institute Convention (March 2019) in Quebec City. Roger is trilingual (English/Spanish/French) and he is willing to relocate for the right position. In his spare time, Roger enjoys playing football, swimming, Cross-Fit, hiking and camping.

Travis Brookson
Travis Brookson, P.Geol, is working on his MSc in Sustainable Energy Development (SEDV) with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. Travis has more than a decade of experience working as an exploration geologist in the oil/gas industry in Western Canada and Ontario, involving advisory, management, and technical roles. He received his BSc (1996) in Geology from the U.Calgary, with a minor in Geophysics. Travis’ current research interest is on the electricity sector, grid decarbonization, and energy storage. Travis enjoys academic and community outreach activities; he is a math tutor at his local high school and helps out with the campus SEDV Society. He also enjoys playing squash, biking and hiking with his family.

Behnaz Lafrenz
Behnaz Lafrenz, P.Eng, is working on her MSc in Sustainable Energy Development (SEDV) with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary, and also holds an MSc in Chemical & Petroleum Engineering (2006) from U.Calgary. Behnaz has more than a decade of experience working with oil producers and service companies worldwide (Russia, Azerbaijan, France and Canada), often incorporating a variety of environmentally sustainable methods for oil extraction. Behnaz also has an MSc in Biotechnology Engineering (2000) from Sharif University of Technology, and a BSc in Chemical Engineering (1996) from University of Tehran, both in Iran. Behnaz is bilingual (English/Persian) and she is willing to relocate for the right position.

Ali Ghavidel
Ali Ghavidel, EIT, is working on his PhD in Geomechanics Engineering with Profs. Dusseault and Gracie at the University of Waterloo. He received his MSc in Rock Mechanics (2014) at the University of Tehran, and a BSc (2010) in Mining Engineering from the University of Sistan & Baluchestan, in Iran. Ali’s research interest is: coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) for geothermal systems. Ali has 5 years’ industry experience and 16 publications to his credit. Ali is bilingual (English/Persian) and he is willing to relocate for the right position.

Kevin Grimeau
Kevin Grimeau, P.Geo, is working on his MSc in Geochemistry with Prof. Mayer at the University of Calgary. Kevin received his BSc (2014) in Petroleum Geology from U.Calgary and, prior to returning to academia, spent 6 years working as a wellsite geology consultant in Western Canada. Kevin’s research interest is: characterizing different shale gas units through the use of isotope analysis and sustainable energy tech, and he is willing to relocate for the right position. Kevin enjoys playing hockey, traveling, and any other activity that gets him outside.

Farhana Mustafa
Farhana Mustafa, EIT, completed her MSc in Sustainable Energy Development (SEDV) with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary in 2021. She received her BSc (2013) in Textile Engineering with a concentration on Wet Processing from the University of Textiles, in Bangladesh. Farhana has 5 years’ QA/QC experience and one publication to her credit . Farhana is bilingual (English/Bengali*) and she is willing to relocate for the right position. In her spare time, she enjoys reading novels, music and exploring Canada’s provincial parks.

Ben Huang
Ben Huang is working on his MPP in Public Policy with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. He received his BA (2020) with a double-major in Economics and Sociology from the Acadia University, in Nova Scotia, completing an undergrad thesis on microcredit policy. Ben is a member of the World University Service of Canada and has completed internships in finance. He is trilingual (English/Chinese/French) and willing to relocate for the right position. In his spare time, Ben volunteers in community and outreach organizations.

Soghra Jalilpour
Soghra Jalilpour, PhD, working on her MPP in Public Policy with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. She received her PhD in Electrochemistry (2019) from the University of Ottawa, completing her research at NRCan. Soghra has an MSc in Inorganic Chemistry (2008) from Isfahan University of Technology, and BSc in Chemistry (2004) from Kashan University, both Iran. Soghra has 6 years’ teaching experience and has 8 publications to her credit. Soghra is bilingual (English/Persian*) and she is willing to relocate for the right position. In her spare time, Soghra enjoys personal fitness, biking and watercolor painting.

Danial Zeinabady
Danial Zeinabady, EIT, is working on his PhD in Petroleum Engineering with Prof. Clarkson at the University of Calgary. He received his MSc in Petroleum/Reservoir Engineering (2014) at the University of Tehran, and a BSc (2012) in Petroleum Engineering from the Petroleum University of Technology, both in Iran. Danial’s research interest are: well testing, unconventional reservoirs and hydraulic fracture modeling. Danial has 5 years’ industry experience and has 4 publications to his credit. Meagan Fong
Meagan Fong is working on her MSc in Sustainable Energy Development (SEDV) with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. Meagan completed a double-major in 2018, receiving a BCom in Finance and a BA in French from the University of Calgary. Meagan has broad research interests: integrating sustainable initiatives in economic, environmental and energy policies, both in Canada and abroad. Meagan is bilingual (English/French) and she is willing to relocate for the right position. In her spare time, Meagan is Treasurer of the on-campus SEDV Society and enjoys running, hiking and baking.

Phyllis Shin-Yu Wu
Phyllis Shin-Yu Wu, EIT, is working on her MASc. in Civil Engineering with Prof. Grasselli at the University of Toronto. Phyllis was born in Toronto and raised in Taipei, Taiwan, where she received her BSE (2020) in Civil Engineering from National Taiwan University (NTU), with a specialization in Wood Construction. Phyllis’s research interests are broad. She worked as an NTU research assistant on bone-inspired structure simulation, produced a short video on environmental conservation/sustainability (https://youtu.be/Nz2M-x6i3CA)

Chris Wallace
Chris Wallace, P.Geo, is working on his MSc in Sustainable Energy Development (SEDV) with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. Chris has more than a decade of experience working with numerous national and multi-national companies to streamline and increase productivity of their energy assets. He received his BSc (2002) in Geology from the University of Calgary. In his spare time, Chris enjoys cycling, climbing, skiing and other adventures with his family.

Ali Yaghoubi
Ali Yaghoubi, EIT, is working on his PhD in Geomechanics/Geophysics with Profs. Dusseault and Leonenko at the University of Waterloo. He received his MSc in Geophysics (2012) at Stanford University, in the US. Ali also has an MSc in Rock Mechanics (2010) from Tarbiat Modares University, and a BSc (2007) in Mining Engineering from Shahroud University, both in Iran. Ali’s research uses an interdisciplinary approach to developing a framework for probabilistic injection-induced fault slip assessment. Ali has 10 years’ industry experience and 12 publications to his credit. Ali is bilingual (English/Persian) and he is willing to relocate for the right position. In addition to traveling, Ali enjoys mountain-climbing, long-distance running and reading Persian poetry.

Kimberly Markvoort
Kimberly Markvoort, P.Geo, is working on her MSc in Sustainable Energy Development (SEDV) with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. Kim has 12 years’ environmental consulting experience, specializing in hydrogeology, site assessment and remediation. She received her BSc (2007) in Environmental Geoscience from Acadia University in Nova Scotia. Kim returned to academia to better prepare herself to help clients, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, navigate the energy transition, integrating traditional knowledge and western scientific method.

Andreas Murphy
Andreas Murphy is working on his MPP in Public Policy with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. He received his BCom (2020) at Memorial University of Newfoundland, with a Certificate in Public Policy. Andreas’ research interest is energy and environmental policy. Andreas currently sits on his university Grad Student Assoc Governance Committee, and is an assoc editor for YYC Policy Blog. Andreas is bilingual, speaking English and French. Andreas enjoys travelling, hiking and volunteers with numerous community groups in a range of capacities.

Lonn Brown
Lonn Brown is working on his PhD in Geophysics with Prof. van der Baan at the University of Alberta. Prior to returning to academia, Lonn spent 4 years working at the International Seismological Centre in the UK, and taught English in Japan (JET Program). He received his MSc in Geophysics/Geodynamics (2015) at the University of Victoria, where he studied problems relating to fault strength and fluctuating stress regimes, and a BSc (2011) in Geophysics from the U.Alberta. Lonn’s research interests are: passive monitoring techniques, poro-elastic effects, and machine learning. Lonn is bilingual (English/Japanese) and he is willing to relocate for the right position. In his free time, Lonn enjoys playing music, reading, traveling, and yoga.

Gideon Choi
Gideon Choi is working on his MSc in Sustainable Energy Development (SEDV) with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. Gideon received his BSc (20000) in Biochemistry and his B-Ed (2002), both from the U.Calgary. As an experienced teacher (Math/Science/Music), both in Canada and Taiwan, Gideon is versatile in effectively communicating complex topics in a range of disciplines. His research interest is: sustainable production of bioplastics, waste management and bioremediation. Gideon is multi-lingual (English/Cantonese/Mandarin/French), and an advocate for inclusivity in education. Gideon enjoys reading, songwriting, performing jazz piano and hiking with his wife and two children.

Afeez Popoola
Afeez Popoola is working on his PhD in Rock physics and Geomechanics with Prof. Grasselli at the University of Toronto. He received a MSc in Geophysics (2014) from King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals in Saudi Arabia. Between 2014-19, Afeez worked with Schlumberger Middle East as a Geophysicist, processing and interpreting VSP and borehole acoustic data. He returned to academia to expand his knowledge and problem solving skills. His current research interests include reservoir rock physics, geomechanics, acoustic emissions and data science.

Isabel Plata
Isabel Plata is working on her PhD in Environmental Geochemistry with Prof. Mayer at the University of Calgary. She received her MSc (2018) in Environmental Geochemistry from the University of Alberta and her BSc Hon (2010) in Geology from the Universidad de Caldas, in Colombia. Isabel’s research focuses on the isotope characterization of flowback water from hydraulically fractured wells in the Province of Alberta. Isabel has 4 years’ work experience in mineral exploration with the Colombian Geological Survey and industry. During her MSc studies, Isable investigated microfiltration and ultrafiltration methods to reuse and recycle flowback water from the Duvernay Formation. In her spare time, Isabel enjoys being outdoors running, walking and hiking.

Mark Mlella
Mark Mlella is working on his PhD in Geophysics with Prof. Van Der Baan at the University of Alberta. He received his MSc in Geology (2019) at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and a BSc (2016) in Geosciences at Trinity University, in Texas. Mark’s research interests are in using machine learning for geophysical data interpretation. Mark is bilingual (English and Swahili) and is willing to relocate for the right position. He enjoys playing soccer, basketball, and dancing.

Nicholas Schumacher
Nicholas Schumacher is working on his MPP at the University of Calgary, while working as a research assistant for Prof. Winter in the School of Public Policy and an Editor for YYC Policy. His research interest is in environmental, economic, and energy policy. He received his BSc Hon in Biological Sciences, with a minor in Economics, also from the U.Calgary. Like many interdisciplinary folks, Nick has maintained an energy-sector focus while working through his degrees, including coursework in Petroleum Microbiology, North American Oil Economics and International Economics and Trade. In his free time, Nick enjoys running, skiing, and personal fitness.

Ana Ortega-Perez
Ana Ortega-Perez is working on her MSc in Geophysics with Prof Van Der Baan at the University of Alberta. She received a BSc (2018) in Geophysical Engineering from Juarez University, in Mexico. Ana’s current research interest is microseismic interpretation and DAS data analysis.

Bezawit Fekadu Haile
Bezawit Fekadu Haile is working on her PhD on Geomechanics at the University of Toronto with Prof. Grasselli. She received her M-Eng (2018) in Civil Engineering at Korea Advanced Institute of technology (KAIST), South Korea, with the Structural Analysis & Materials research group, and her B-Eng (2015) in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, graduating with Distinction. Beza’s research interest focuses on the multiscale properties of geotechnical and concrete materials, using numerical and microscale modelling techniques. Beza has been an assistant lecturer, research associate, and junior design engineer with an engineering consultancy firm. She enjoys nature, the outdoors and an active lifestyle, including: hiking and numerous sports.

Emma Dizon
Emma Dizon is working on her MPP in Public Policy at the University of Calgary. She received her BSc (honours) in Biology from the University of Calgary (2017). Emma has broad research interests in energy and environment, and is currently focused on energy affordability, federalism in carbon pricing, and crude oil transport. In her free time, Emma enjoys hiking and backcountry camping in the Canadian Rockies.

Jason Droboth
Jason Droboth is working on his MSc in Geoscience Communication with Profs. Dolphin and Eaton at the University of Calgary. He has a BSc Hon (2017) in Geology from Mount Royal University (MRU), graduating with honours. Jason has maintained an interdisciplinary research interest in creative communication of science-based information, from his undergraduate thesis, The Living Data Wall: Engagement Through Visualization, to his current focus on identifying trends in the public perception of Geoscience, understanding what informs those perceptions, and determining how scientists can more effectively engage the public in productive conversations. Jason has a range of communicative experience in both an advisory and technical capacity, having worked at MRU as a website designer, academic advisor, outreach coordinator and teaching assistant. Jason has also guided the re-branding of REDEVELOP and its new website design. In his free time, Jason volunteers with TEDxYYC and Art the Science, helping people more easily access transformative ideas and scientific concepts. He is also an avid book-reader, gardener, hiker and urbanite.

Evangeline Eldridge
Evangeline Eldridge is working on her MSc in Geoscience with Prof. Ryan at the University of Calgary. She received her BSc Hon (2018) in Environmental Sciences with a concentration in Geology at U.Calgary, graduating with first-class honours. Evangeline’s current research is the characterization of radon-rich groundwater in Alberta and it’s impact on indoor air quality. She has completed work terms with CNOOC (in abandonment and reclamation) and the City of Calgary (in environmental education and industrial waste processing). In her spare time, Evangeline chairs the Sustainability Committee of the U.Calgary Grad Students Assoc, and volunteers with Girl Guides Canada. Evangeline’s interests include: hydrogeology, reclamation and remediation, resource management and outreach.

Kareem Aboayanah
Kareem Aboayanah is working on his PhD in Civil Engineering with Prof. Grasselli at the University of Toronto. He received his M-Eng (2019) in Petroleum Engineering from Politecnico di Torino, in Italy, and a B-Eng (2012) from Suez University, in Egypt. Kareem has more than 2 years’ experience in hydraulic fracturing and acidization of heavy-oil reservoirs in Egypt. His research interests include: THM-coupled processes in rock mechanics and numerical simulation of reservoir geomechanics. Kareem speaks English, Arabic and little Italian. In his spare time Kareem likes to read and watch documentaries.

Yunkun Wang
Yunkun Wang is working on his PhD in Geomechanics with Prof. Grasselli at the University of Toronto. He received an MSc in Mining and Geological Engineering (2019) at the University of Arizona, and a B-Eng (2015) in Drilling Engineering at China University of Geosciences (Beijing). Yunkun’s MSc research focused on the application of photogrammetry to rock mass characterization and 3D point cloud processing. His current research interests are 3D scanning, geomechanical modeling and fracture characterization. Yunkun has completed several internships in the oil industry, including: well log interpretation, prospecting and geological evaluation. In his free time, Yunkun enjoys playing soccer, hiking and travelling.

Ryan Dormer
Ryan Dormer is working towards his MPP degree at the University of Calgary. His research is focused on the impact of climate change policies on energy-sector performance and spending, and how similar policies should be applied to other industries. Ryan received his BA (2019) in Political Science, with a minor in Economics, also from the U.Calgary. Ryan spent 4 years on the Logistics Team at Tesla Inc., and currently works as a research assistant to Prof. Winter in the School of Public Policy. As an undergrad, Ryan led an outreach group focused on information transfer and assistance for students considering graduate studies. He enjoys playing hockey, traveling, and exploring Calgary with his dog.

Jiujie Cai
Jiujie Cai is working on his PhD in Petroleum Engineering with Prof. Chen at the University of Calgary. He received his M-Eng (2015) in Oil & Gas Field Development and his B-Eng (2012) in Petroleum Engineering both with First-Class Honours from the University of Petroleum in China. Jiujie’s research interests are hydraulic fracturing propagation modeling using numerical simulations, evaluation of unconventional reservoirs and height containment mechanisms. He completed several internships in China, including working on a hydraulic fracturing team for the North China Petroleum Bureau Downhole Operation Company and the Li’ke Petroleum Technology Service Company. Jiujie is trilingual (Chinese, English and a little French). In his spare time, Jiujie enjoys hiking, running and playing tennis.

Laura Flinkfelt
Laura Flinkfelt is working on her MPP with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. Her current research interests are in the overlap between environmental and economic policy. Laura received a BA (2017) in Political Science and a BA (2016) in History with a minor in Philosophy, both from the University of Calgary. In her spare time, Laura sits on the U.Calgary Senate and several committees, including the Grad Students Assoc, and the local AUPE. She also mentors two undergraduate students. Laura has 7 years’ experience in public and non-for-profit administration and is currently studying French as a second language. She enjoys hiking, mountaineering and plays outdoor soccer for a competitive women’s team in Calgary.

Li Li
Li Li is working on his PhD in Civil Engineering with Profs. Dusseault and Gracie at the University of Waterloo. He received his MSc in Safety Science and Engineering, B-Eng in Safety Engineering at the Taiyuan University of Technology in China. Li’s current research focuses on numerical simulation of solution cavern development in salt beds (for storage of natural gas, hydrocarbons, or compressed air for energy storage), aiming to enhance understanding of the salt rock dissolution process for improved control of the shape of a salt cavern during dissolution mining. Li is also published on the topics of coalbed methane recovery and CO2 geosequestration. He is bilingual (English and Mandarin) and is willing to relocate for the right position.

Shelley Alexander
Shelley Alexander is working on her MSc in Geoscience with Profs. Mayer and Ryan at the University of Calgary. She has a BSc in Environmental Science, with a concentration in Geology (2018), from the University of Calgary, as well as a BSc in Zoology (1998) from the University of Toronto. Shelley’s current research interest is in hydrogeology, with a focus on source water protection planning programs, particularly for remote communities in Western Canada. Before returning to academia, Shelley spent 7 years working for the City of Calgary in various environmental roles. Shelley is Métis and bilingual (English/French).

Mirella Chiappe
Mirella Chiappe is working on her MPP in Public Policy with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. She received a M-Plan (2018) in Urban Planning at the University of Calgary, and a BA (2014) in Geography at McGill University. Mirella is also the Project Manager of her team. Mirella’s research interest is in environmental and economic policy. She has been actively involved in graduate student government and is serving as VP of Internal Affairs on the MPP Student Assoc. Mirella has a global perspective, having lived in Montreal, New York and London (UK), and would be willing to relocate for the right position. In her free time, she enjoys running, travelling, and trying new foods.

Jorge Nustes Andrade
Jorge Nustes Andrade is working on his MSc in Geophysics with Prof. Van Der Baan at the University of Alberta. He received a BSc (2018) in Geoscience at Universidad de Los Andes Colombia. Jorge’s current research interest involves the use of machine learning techniques for microseismic interpretation and event detection. He is an active volunteer at the SEG Wiki and a 2017 SEG Wiki Champion. Jorge enjoys the outdoors and sports, especially soccer and basketball. Paulina Wozniakowska
Paulina Wozniakowska is working on her PhD in Geophysics with Prof. Eaton at the University of Calgary. She received her MSc (2016) and BSc (2015) in Applied Geophysics at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, Poland. Paulina’s current research focuses on applications of machine learning in induced seismicity analysis. Before returning to academia, she worked in the Czech Republic as a junior analyst at a company specializing in microseismic monitoring of hydraulic-fracturing operations in USA and Canada. Paulina has also completed internships in Poland and Slovakia, in the areas of mining seismology and environmental monitoring using geophysical methods. She was a board member of the SEG Student Chapter in Krakow, and currently, is a member of the CSEG/EAGE/SEG Student Chapter in Calgary. In her spare time, Paulina enjoys yoga, board games and the ukulele. She speaks a number of languages, including English, Polish, Spanish and Czech.

Rasoul Sheikhmali
Rasoul Sheikhmali is working on his PhD in Civil Engineering with Prof. Priest at the University of Calgary. He received a MSc in Mining Engineering (2016) at the University of Tehran, and a BSc (2012) in Mining Engineering at the Urmia University, in Iran. Rasoul’s research interests are in the areas of numerical modelling of hydraulic fracturing and analysis of casing collapse phenomenon. After completing his MSc, Rasoul worked on an academic-industry collaborative geomechanical research project (i.e., casing collapse in the Iranian oilfields). Rasoul is trilingual (English, Persian and Azerbaijani). He loves mountaineering, traveling and music.

Edouard Kravchinsky
Edouard Kravchinsky is working on his PhD in Geomechanics with Prof. Grasselli at the University of Toronto. He received a MSc in Geophysics (2018) with Prof. Van Der Baan, as well as a BSc (2015) in Geophysics, at the University of Alberta. Edouard is also the Project Manager of his team. During his MSc studies, Edouard’s research focused on cellular automaton and simulation of earthquake sequences, and he joined the Microseismic Industry Consortium (MIC). His current research focuses on geomechanical modeling, fracture propagations and acoustic emissions. Outside of work, Edouard enjoys an active lifestyle and is a recreational trumpet player.

Mitchell Boyne
Mitchell Boyne is working on his MPP in Public Policy with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. He received a BSc (2015) in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta. Mitchell’s current research is exploring potential regulatory frameworks for the partial upgrading of bitumen in Alberta. He is registered as an EIT with APEGA and has two years’ experience working as a reservoir engineer on in-situ oil sands projects with ConocoPhillips, where he developed production forecasts and optimized operating strategies. Mitchell has completed several internships in the energy sector, including one in completions engineering and one in oilfield equipment design. During his MPP studies, he has received two academic awards. In his free time, Mitchell enjoys playing basketball, hiking, and travelling.

Zahra Esmaeilzadeh
Zahra Esmaeilzadeh is working on her MSc in Geophysics/Seismicity with Prof. Eaton at the University of Calgary. She received a MSc (2009) in Reservoir Engineering at the Amirkabir University of Technology, and a BSc (2006) in Production Engineering at the Petroleum University of Technology, in Iran. Before returning to academia, Zahra worked 10 years for the National Iranian Oil Company, studying large oil and gas reservoirs and completing, among other things, well and reservoir evaluation and performance modelling, production optimization and forecasting, and simulation studies of enhanced recovery processes in large-scale projects. She served as a member of cross-functional teams, coordinating several projects requiring technical and economic evaluation. Zahra is currently registered as a EIT with APEGA, with a P.Eng. application under review. She is also a nature lover and enjoys charity activities and events.

Rabia Ladha
Rabia Ladha is working on her MPP in Public Policy with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. She received her BSc (2016) in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta. Rabia is also the Project Manager of her team. During her BSc studies, Rabia completed 3 co-ops (20 months in total), where she worked in distribution design at ATCO Gas, on a terminal expansion engineering project with Enbridge, and in air policy research with Alberta Environment and Parks (previously Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development). Rabia is currently taking French as a Second Language and plans to pursue a career in energy-sector policy. She is interested in community outreach, and served two terms as Chair (Strategy, Operations & Partnerships) for Edmonton’s NextGen . Rabia also has an interest in visual artwork.

Mauricio Reyes Canales
Mauricio Reyes Canales is working on his PhD in Geophysics with Prof. Van Der Baan at the University of Alberta.He received a B-Eng (2015) in Geophysical Engineering at the Universidad Simon Bolivar, Venezuela. During his undergraduate studies, Mauricio was an exchange student at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology for one year, where he completed a thesis on seismic Interpretation in the Barents Sea. Mauricio is a member of the Microseismic Industry Consortium (MIC), and his research is focused on hazard analysis for induced seismicity, combining geostatistics and geomechanics into probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. He is bilingual (fluent in Spanish and English) and currently learning French. Mauricio is an active volunteer at the UoA with both the UAGGS and the ISS.

Melissa MacDonald
Melissa MacDonald is working on her MSc in Geochemistry and Petroleum Hydrogeology with Prof. Mayer at the University of Calgary. She received her BSc.Hon (2017) in Geology from the University of Alberta. Melissa’s current research is focusing on characterizing of gases, condensates and flowback fluids from hydraulically-fractured wells in the Montney Formation. Past research projects involved fingerprinting formation waters with geochemical techniques to identify fluid flow and potential borehole leaks. Melissa volunteers with the CSPG and enjoys running, skiing and hiking.

Wayne Park
Wayne Park is working on his MASc in Civil Engineering with Profs. Dusseault and Leonenkoat the University of Waterloo. He received a BASc (2017) in Geological Engineering at the University of Waterloo (with Honours). Wayne’s current research focuses on evaluating the feasibility of creating geothermal energy storage in deep georepositories that store waste heat or solar heat on a seasonal basis. Wayne also spent 3 years in the oil sands working in mine planning/design and geotechnical investigation for residential and commercial buildings and infrastructures. In his spare time, Wayne enjoys training in martial arts.

Neil Fleming
Neil Fleming is working on his MSc in Geoscience with Profs. Mayer and Ryan at the University of Calgary. He also received a BSc in Environmental Geoscience (2016) at the University of Calgary (with Distinction). Neil is also the Project Manager of his team. Neil’s current research involves an applied, field-scale investigation of gas migration around leaking energy wells, involving active collaboration with several oilfield producers and service companies. Neil’s career interests include hydrogeology and resource management, monitoring and remediation. Neil is an avid backcountry skier, backpacker and mountain biker, with an aptitude for organization, resourcefulness, and understanding challenging environments. Neil is willing to travel for the right position, ideally including a mix of field and office work.

Mei’s research focus includes numerical modeling using self-developed FEM code and lab testing focusing on the effect of acid on tight sand. Ryan Green
Ryan Green is working on his MPP in Public Policy with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. Ryan is a P.Geo, registered with APEGA. He received his BSc (2014) in Environmental Earth Sciences (with Distinction) at the University of Alberta.Before returning to academia, Ryan worked in environmental consulting on energy wellsite remediation projects in Western Canada. He also completed several summer internships in the energy sector, including operation of a remote sour gas plant in northern Alberta. Yiru Zhou
Yiru Zhou is working on her MSc in Geophysics and Geomechanics, with Profs. Van Der Baan and Currie at the University of Alberta. She received a BSc (2018) in Geophysics from the University of Toronto. Yiru previously worked on the source mechanism inversions of hydraulic fracturing induced seismicities within the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. Her current research interests focus on the geomechanical modelling of rock failure based on the bonded particle method. Jieyu Zhang
Jieyu Zhang is working on her MSc in Geophysics with Prof. Van der Baan at the University of Alberta. She received her BSc (2013) in Geophysics at the China University of Petroleum, in Beijing. Jieyu is also the Project Manager of the Induced Seismicity Team. The focus of Jieyu’s research is the ecological analysis of fault reactivation and the statistical study of fault reactivation in different models. During her undergraduate studies, Jieyu spent a semester as an exchange student studying geology at the University of Tulsa, in Oklahoma. Prevously, she worked on improving coherency methods to identify subsurface discontinuities. Jieyu is bilingual (English and Chinese) and is willing to relocate for the right position. She also enjoys running and community volunteer work.

Scott McKean
Scott McKean is working on his PhD in Geoscience-Engineering with Prof. Priest at the University of Calgary. He received his MSc (2017) in Geophysics and his B-Eng in Civil Engineering at the University of Calgary. Scott’s current research focuses on numerical modelling of hydraulic fracturing and induced seismicity. Before returning to academia, he worked as a consulting geoenvironmental engineer for >8 years. Scott is passionate about sustainability and accredited as a LEED AP and ENV SP and works with Engineers Without Borders to effect systems change and poverty elimination. He loves mountain sports and is roughly proficient in French.

Sobhan Iranmanesh
Sobhan Iranmanesh is working on his MA in Economics at the University of Calgary. He also has an MSc (2013) in Environmental Engineering from the University of Calgary, and a B-Eng (2009) in Chemical Engineering from the University of Isfahan, in Iran. Sobhan’s current research straddles environmental engineering and economics and he is a registered EIT with APEGA. His previous MSc thesis research dealt with removal of naphthenic acid from water using biomass-based activated carbon.

Suzie Jia
Suzie Jia is working on her PhD in Petroleum Engineering with Professors Wong and Eaton at the University of Calgary. She received her MSc (2015) at the University of Alberta, and her BSc (2012) at the University of Waterloo. Her interest focuses on investigating the failure mechanisms and stress evolution during hydraulic fracturing. Her research integrates different methodologies, such as MATLAB programming, numerical modeling, laboratory tests and geophysical data analysis to better characterize the stimulated reservoir volume.

Yu Wang
Yu Wang is working on her MASc in Geotechnical Engineering with Prof. Grasselli at the University of Toronto. She received her B-Eng in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Alberta. Yu’s research focus includes geomechanical modeling using FDEM and lab testing focusing on effect of gas in pores during the rock deformation process. She has completed internships in the oil and gas industry (TransCanada and Trican Well Service Ltd.), involving well performance enhancement design and field QA/QC work on standard conformance for pipeline construction. Yu enjoys reading, swimming and Sichuan cuisine.

Jordan Phillips
Jordan Phillips is working on her MSc in Geoscience with Prof. Van der Baan at the University of Alberta. She received her BSc (2015) in Geophysics at the University of Alberta, and a GeoTech Diploma (2017) from NAIT. Jordan is also the Project Manager of the Fugitive Gas Emissions Team. Jordan is currently investigating the technical and perceived risks of induced seismicity, including social implications such as public perception and communication challenges within the industry. Jordan’s goal is to work in science communication and/or consulting within the industry as society moves towards increased accountability and sustainability in energy development. She is a Geoscientist In Training with APEGA, is trilingual (English, conversational French and some Spanish), and enjoys active sports activities, including figure skating and rock climbing. She is also a volunteer with Metro Cinema at Garneau Theater and with the Federation Skating Club.

Dylan Riley
Dylan Riley is working on his MSc in Geoscience with Prof. Mayer at the University of Calgary. He received his BSc (2014) in Geoscience at the University of Calgary. Dylan holds a GIT designation with the APEGA, has 2 years experience in exploration and development geology, and plans to pursue a career in environmental consulting as a hydrogeologist. Dylan is also involved with the CMC Research Institute , where he is monitoring and characterizing CO2 and CH4 conditions for comparison with CO2 injection and storage data. He is also involved in a gas migration study in southern Alberta. Dylan has spent his life in Alberta, enjoying the outdoors and winter sports. That said, he is partial to fieldwork and willing to travel or relocate for the right position. A former member of Canada’s National Development Team, Dylan has been a competitve snowboard racer on a global scale and, on a local scale, a coach and volunteer in youth sports. Dylan is also bilingual (English and German).

Ruiqiang (Richard) Li
Ruiqiang (Richard) Li is working on his PhD in Geosciences and Geomechanics with Prof. Dusseault at the University of Waterloo. He received his MSc (2011) in Geophysics, a B-Eng (2008) in Geological Engineering, and a BA (2008) in English, at Taiyuan University of Technology in China. Richard’s current work focuses on geological and geomechanical characterization of shale gas deposits in eastern Canada (Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick). In addition to research and teaching, Richard has actively worked on campus as a training program coordinator and graduate professional development program specialist. Off campus, Richard enjoys interacting with the community as a photographer, language interpreter and yoga instructor. Richard is open to a range of career possibilities after graduation, including: teaching and research (within and outside academia), working in industry, government or consulting. He is bilingual (English and Chinese Mandarin), and is willing to relocate for the right position.

Tiago Morais
Tiago Morais is working on his PhD in Geoscience at the University of Calgary with Prof. Ryan. He received his MSc (2017) and BSc (2015) in Geoscience at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil. Tiago’s current research involves prediction and evaluation of environmental impacts potentially caused by unconventional oil and gas exploration and production. His MSc research focused on deep marine reservoir characterization. While in Porto Alegre, Tiago worked in an environmental consulting company and volunteered at the Children´s Cancer Institute. His career preference is to work in research and become a professor. Tiago is bilingual (English and Portuguese). He loves photography, surfing and traveling.

Victor Gallardois
Victor Gallardois working on his MPP in Public Policy with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. He also received an MA (2008) in Economics at the University of Alberta, and a BA (2004) in Commerce at the Mexican Autonomous Institute of Technology (ITAM). Victor is currently working as an energy trader for TransAlta, covering the Midwest power market in the U.S., while working on his MPP in Public Policy. He witnessed how the evolving discourse around climate change and oil pipelines led to the resurgence of riskier and more expensive shipping methods like rail. The disconnect between the public’s declared intentions and the actual effects of their demands was the impetus for his return to academia. Victor was the recipient of the Graduate Core Prize in Economics for outstanding academic achievement in 2008. He has a range of experience working energy companies in Alberta (TransAlta Corp, Capital Power Corp and TransCanada Pipelines) and France (Électricité de France). Born and raised in Mexico, Victor calls Alberta home now. He is grateful for the opportunities Alberta has given him and hopes to contribute to the success of the province in the future.

Volodymyr Vragov
Volodymyr Vragov is working on his MSc in Geophysics with Prof. Eaton at the University of Calgary. He received his BSc (2014) in Geophysics (with Distinction) from the University of Alberta. Volodymyr is also the Project Manager of the Pipeline vs. Rail Team. Volodymyr is currently conducting research in the area of hydraulic fracturing induced seismicity near Town of Fox Creek, Alberta. He has almost 2 years of industry experience in geoscience workflow development and deployment, unconventional reservoir characterization and frontier offshore exploration with Shell Canada and Nexen Energy. Volodymyr is also an active volunteer on campus, as President of the CSEG/EAGE/SEG student chapter, where he helps to facilitate geoscience students’ development through organizing Talk Series, industry courses, networking events and student geoscience competitions.

Hossein Ahmadi
Hossein Ahmadi is working on his PhD in Petroleum Engineering with Prof. Clarkson at the University of Calgary. He received his MASc (2017) and B-Eng (2014) in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Tehran, in Iran. Hossein is also a research assistant with the Tight Oil Consortium. His research interests are rate transient analysis, unconventional reservoirs, and well testing.

Jade McLean
Jade McLean is working on her MPP in Public Policy with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. She received her BA (2016) in Commerce of Natural Resources, Energy and the Environment at the University of Alberta. Jade completed an internship in the Environment and Energy Section of the Embassy of Canada in Washington, D.C., where she conducted research to support policy development on trans-boundary resource issues, such as: species at risk, fisheries, and mining. Jade also completed an internship as a Climate Change Liaison in the Métis Nation of Alberta, where she assisted in the planning, development and implementation of 18 Climate Change Workshops throughout Alberta. During her undergraduate studies, Jade worked as a research assistant. where she examined corporate tax structures, multi-national tax law, and international tax avoidance strategies implemented by Apple Inc., Google, Starbucks and Burger King. Jades is also the recipient of two Public Policy scholarships and an active volunteer in her community.

Karen Grey
Karen Grey is working on her PhD in Petroleum Geology with Prof. Cheadle at the University of Western Ontario. She received her BSc (Hon) (2010) in Geology at the University of New Brunswick. Karen spent several years working in the mineral exploration and mining industry after completing her undergraduate degree, before pursuing her interest in petroleum geoscience. The focus of her current research is modelling mechanical stratigraphy in a low-permeability reservoir, under the broader scope of induced seismicity processes. Although Karen enjoys research, she is eager to get back into industry and is open to relocating for the right position. Born and raised on the east coast, Karen’s first language is English and she has intermediate-level French proficiency.

German Rodriguez-Pradilla
German Rodriguez-Pradilla is working on his PhD in Geoscience with Prof. Eaton at the University of Calgary. He received his MSc (2014) in Geophysics and his B-Eng (2010) in Civil Engineering at Universidad Nacional de Colombia. German is also the Project Manager of the Hydraulic Fracturing Team. German’s current research focuses on developing robust methods for microseismic data processing and modelling applied to unconventional reservoir characterization and hazard analysis of induced seismicity. He is also interested in R&D work in microseismology associated with the exploration and development of natural resources after graduation. German is also bilingual (English and Spanish).

Hongyuan (Henry) Zhou
Hongyuan (Henry) Zhou is working on his MASc in Civil Engineering and Rock Mechanics with Prof. Grasselli at the University of Toronto. He received his B-Eng (2016) in Geological Engineering with a Geophysics option at University of Waterloo. Henry’s research focuses on shear-induced dilation of rock joints based on quantified surface description, and stress influence of hydraulically-induced fractures using FDEM. He has completed internships in the areas of hydraulic fracturing, tunnelling, geotechnical, and road construction, and is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II / Robert M. Smith Memorial Graduate Scholarship.

Jinghan (Cici) Zhong
Jinghan (Cici) Zhong is working on her PhD in Geomechanical Engineering with Prof. Grasselli at the University of Toronto. She received her MASc (2016) in Oil and Gas Engineering at Memorial University, in Newfoundland, and her B-Eng (2013) in Resource Exploration Engineering from Xi’an Petroleum University, in China. Cici’s current research involves hydraulic fracturing, micro-seismic, microscopic mechanisms and fracture modelling using FDEM simulation of unconventional reservoirs. She is also interested in drilling penetration mechanisms, drill string dynamics and well control. Cici is bilingual (English and Chinese).

Leah Wilson
Leah Wilson is working on her MSc in Hydrogeochemistry with Prof. Mayer at the University of Calgary. She received her BSc (2016) in Geology at Mount Royal University. Leah’s current research focuses on nitrate (sources and distribution) within the shallow groundwater of Alberta. She has completed internships with Devon Canada (Jackfish Thermal), Encana (Exploration and EH&S), and PrairieSky Royalty Ltd. (Exploration) and is excited to rejoin Encana’s EH&S team during the summer of 2018. Leah looks forward to working with the government or oil and gas industry and is most engaged when applying her skills in support of people or the environment. Leah has been an active volunteer mentor for young girls interested in STEM related fields with Cybermentor. She also dedicates her time to Hydrogeologists Without Borders, where she builds and manages teams of international hydrogeologists who are translating the Groundwater textbook, by Freeze and Cherry, into their mother language. When she’s not studying, Leah enjoys spending time with her cats and dog, creating pottery, reading, and planning her next travel adventure. Leah’s first language is English; she also has an intermediate level of German and Swiss German from her year living in Switzerland as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student.

Linh Tran
Linh Tran is working on her MA in Economics at the University of Calgary. She received her MBA (2017) at the University of Alberta, and her BA (1998) in Economics at the University of Economics, in Hochiminh City. Linh also has an Advanced Computer Security Certification (2017) from Standford University. Linh is the recipient of numerous academic scholarships and has >10 years experience working as a professional accountant in both Alberta and Vietnam. Linh is interested in the interaction between the decisions made by policy makers and regulated parties. Linh’s research is primarily in the field of environmental economics. She has a particular interest in the enforcement of environmental regulations and the use of warnings and the increasing reliance on public complaints to enforce environmental standards.

Aly Abdelaziz
Aly Abdelaziz is working on his PhD in Civil Engineering with Prof. Grasselli at the University of Toronto. He received his B-Eng (2007) in Civil Engineering (Structures) at Benha University in Egypt. Aly is also the Project Manager of the LNG Team. Between 2007 and 2015, Aly worked in geotechnical investigation, construction monitoring and laboratory materials testing in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He returned to academia to expand his knowledge and make connections between that knowledge and industry. His current research interests include generating synthetic samples using Voronoi tessellations and understanding the influence on shape tolerances on rock strength. Aly is a running fanatic on the verge of running his first half marathon, and a hobby-baker.

Hanh B. Thi
Hanh B. Thi is working on her MSc in Geophysics with Prof. Van der Baan at the University of Alberta. She also has an MSc in Earthquake and Seismology Engineering (2017) from the University of Grenoble Alpes in France, and a B-Eng (2015) (Cum Laude) in Geophysical Engineering from the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology in Vietnam. Bui enjoys R & D and would, ideally, like to work in petroleum exploration or earthquake engineering. Bui is bilingual (English and Vietnamese) and she is willing to relocate for the right position. After graduating from Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, she worked as a researcher at Geophysics department, Vietnam Petroleum Institute. She won the Erasmus Mundus plus scholarship and study in the Master of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology. Her interest is oil and gas exploration and earthquake engineering. Hanh is a young enthusiastic person.

Jake Fuss
Jake Fuss is working on his MPP in Public Policy with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. He received his BA (2017) in Commerce – Finance at University of Calgary. Jake’s research focus is economic and fiscal policy, primarily concentrating on evaluating the federal equalization program and the inclusion of resource revenues. Jake completed an internship for a mortgage company in downtown Calgary and worked as a Teaching Assistant in the Haskayne School of Business. He plans to work in the fields of energy, government or politics. For 3 years, Jake received Dean’s List recognition by the Haskayne School of Business (GPA >3.7). He is also an active volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, enjoys travelling the globe, and a range of amateur sports, such as: tennis, football, and soccer.

Sarah Saad
Sarah Saad is working on her MSc in Geochemistry with Prof. Mayer at the University of Calgary. She received her BSc (2010) with a double major in Petroleum and Environmental Geology from the University of Calgary. Sarah’s current research is in isotope geochemistry, focused on the Montney Formation, an unconventional low-permeability hydrocarbon reservoir located in western Canada. Sarah’s past work experience includes researching under-developed basins in the Arctic with the Geological Survey of Canada, logging Alberta oil sands cores for various major oil company projects, mapping in conventional Alberta Deep Basin plays, and oilfield operations in English and French. Most recently, she completed a project with a busy E&P company applying her isotope geochemistry knowledge to solve issues involving fracking.

Michael Lim
Michael Lim is working on his MPP in Public Policy with Prof. Winter at the University of Calgary. He received his BSc (Hon) (2015) (First Class Honours) in Chemistry at the University of Calgary. Michael is also the Project Manager of the Orphaned Wells Team. Michael is interested in energy, environmental and economic policies, with a focus on renewables. He is particularly interested in the Alberta energy market and participates in local policy symposiums with the CD Howe Institute and Alberta Chamber of Resources. Michael is also the recipient of numerous academic awards and scholarships. During his undergraduate studies, he conducted an NSERC-funded research project exploring energy storage materials, namely redox flow battery applications for grid-level electricity storage. Michael is bilingual (English and Korean) and possesses dual citizenship (Canada and South Korea).

Daniela Becerra
Daniela Becerra is working on her PhD in Geoscience with Prof. Clarkson at the University of Calgary. She received her MSc (2017) in Geology at University of Oklahoma, and her BSc (Cum Laude) (2013) in Geology at Universidad Industrial de Santander, in Colombia. Along with her PhD work, Daniela is also a research assistant with the Tight Oil Consortium. Her current research focus is the integrated petrophysical and reservoir characterization of the Montney Formation in Western Canada. Daniela grew up in a small city in Northern Colombia. At age 15 she started her undergraduate studies, moving to a bigger city where she thoroughly enjoyed living in and experiencing a different culture. Daniela has lived in five cities across three different countries, and plans to continue pursuing opportunities abroad following the completion of her doctoral studies. In her spare time, she enjoys hosting friends and family for her home-made traditional Colombian cuisine.

Earl Magsipoc
Earl Magsipoc is working on his MASc in Civil Engineering with Prof. Grasselli at the University of Toronto. He received his B-Eng (2017) in Civil Engineering with an Environmental Engineering option at the University of Waterloo. After completing an internship at a geotechnical software development company, he was inspired to pursue a career in geotechnical engineering and tackle the the complexity it presents. He has also completed several internships in municipal engineering, highway transportation design, and tunnelling design. The focus of Earl’s research is numerical geomechanics modelling with an interest in rock tunnelling, and he is also interested in exploring the use of computer technology for engineering applications.

Hui Gang
Hui Gang is working on his PhD in Petroleum Engineering with Prof. Chen at the University of Calgary. He received his MSc (2011) in Oilfield Development Engineering at Graduate School of RIPED,Petrhochina, and his B-Eng (2008) in Petroleum Engineering at the China University of Geoscience. Hui previously worked for 6 years in RIPED (CNPC) as a reservoir geology engineer, concentrating on fractures characterization and reservoir description for low permeability reservoirs. His current research is focused on fracture propagation and simulation, integrating geomechanics, geology and reservoir engineering to simulate hydraulic and natural fractures. He would like to move into R&D work in this area after graduation. Hui enjoys an active lifestyle of basketball, badminton and swimming.

Zhengru Yang
Zhengru Yang is working on his MSc in Geoscience with Prof. Clarkson at the University of Calgary. Zhengru also has a BSc (2017) in Geology from the University of Calgary, and a second BSc (2017) in Petroleum Geology from the University of Petroleum, in Beijing, China. Zhengru’s research interests concern unconventional tight reservoir evaluation, with a focus on permeability / diffusivity determination, gas adsorption capacity simulation and geological controls on reservoir characteristics within the Montney and Duvernay Formations. He is also a research assistant with the Tight Oil Consortium. Zhengru completed an internship with the PetroChina Company Limited (Liaohe Oil Company), working in sandy reservoirs distribution analysis in a fault-subsidence lake basin. Zhengru is also bilingual (English and Mandarin).

Shelley Alexander
Shelley Alexander is working on her MSc in Geoscience with Profs. Mayer and Ryan at the University of Calgary. She has a BSc in Environmental Science, with a concentration in Geology (2018), from the University of Calgary, as well as a BSc in Zoology (1998) from the University of Toronto. Shelley’s current research interest is in hydrogeology, with a focus on source water protection planning programs, particularly for remote communities in Western Canada. Before returning to academia, Shelley spent 7 years working for the City of Calgary in various environmental roles. Shelley is Métis and bilingual (English/French).
